Agriculture III & IV

This year long course includes studies and applications involved in cattle, swine and sheep genetics, and selection, reproduction, nutrition in both confinement and pasture situation, diseases, as well as general production agriculture management practices.  Farm accounting and record keeping for both individual student and FFA Foundation will be kept and reviewed.  Primary leaders in FFA supervised occupational experience extra curricular events (fairs and shows) will come from this course.  Major farm laboratory activities will be arranged for upper level students in this course.  Farm facility improvements, design modifications, maintenance and repair will be included in lab exercises.

 

Automotive Mechanics I & II

ROP AUTO I : This year long course is designed for juniors and seniors who have not had any automotive background.  The course will include automotive theory and shop course work and will give the student technical information and related shop experience with 90% of class time devoted to classroom lecture and the remaining time to shop-related laboratory experience.

ROP AUTO II
Grade level:  11 - 12 Prerequisites:  One year of automotive mechanics
This year long course is designed to compliment the basic course for those vocationally or avocationally interested in auto mechanics.  In this course, we put into practice the materials learned in ROP Auto I.  Students are involved in tune-up and overhaul procedures, covering all phases of the automobile.  Personal and shop safety is also emphasized.  All students will participate in a community classroom program during the 4th quarter of the first year of Auto II, and 2nd semester of the second year of Auto II.  This class is repeatable for additional credits.

This course prepares individuals for enrollment in advanced vocational and technical education programs and includes occupational and basic technical information and laboratory experience directly related to current practices in the construction industry. The purpose of the program is to assist students in making occupational and educational choices. Individuals are provided with information and basic skills in the erection, installation, maintenance or repair of residential and industrial structures. Activities include project organization, starting the job, foundations and support structures, practices and procedures for standard wood framing, exterior wall and roof coverings, vapor and light barriers and new technologies. Students apply skills through construction of a scale framing model.

This competency-based course introduces students to the tools, methods, materials, and media of commercial art. This course also helps prepare students for employment as illustrators, photo-processes artists, screenprint production artists, and graphic design artists for both computer and print applications (which includes advertising and packaging design and display and set design).

Students will also build a portfolio of their work consisting of ads, posters, packaging designs, screenprint designs, logos, illustrations both manual and computer generated.

Year Two or “Advanced Computers” allows students to expand their knowledge in an area of interest, be it programming, computer graphics, animation, video editing, computer building, networking, or robotics.

At the completion of this course students will qualify to take the state certification exam for nursing assistant.

ROP Drafting is an introduction to the use, care and concepts of a typical CAD system with associated hardware and software. In addition, the students will utilize a "hands on" approach to develop skills in operating a CAD system. Knowledge of computers or programming is not required. The structure of this elective course will consist of, (1) traditional manual drafting practice involving ongoing skill development and, (2) computer-aided drafting practice involving basic drawing techniques and hard copying. This portion of the course will include: vocabulary development, hardware, terminology, software and system operation, input/output devices, line insertion, geometric shapes, text insertion, dimensioning, screen control, grids, coordinate systems, editing, hatching, layering, symbols libraries, and management of drawing files. The student will use Auto CAD to draw basic 2- D technical drawings under the guidance of a concept building training manual. The skills learned in this class will prepare students for entry level drafting positions or for advanced training at the post secondary level.

This competency-based course will provide students with the opportunity to learn entry-level skills in the clothing and fashion field. Style, line, color and design principles will set the tone for creating garments. Students will apply art elements and principles of fine art and design to their work. Students will produce work that demonstrates individual creativity, multicultural elements, and problem-solving ability. This course will train students in the areas of textile care and selection, sewing machine operation, measurement, pattern fitting, sewing terminology, color analysis, fashion show production, garment construction, alteration and clothing repair, tailoring technique, textile testing, merchandising, design, and careers.

This class is designed to acquaint the student with theories and principles of artistic design and allow the student to apply an artistic approach to floral design. Students will acquire practical skills and knowledge by exploring the history of floral art and applying elements and principles of design through use of floral art media. Floral arrangements will include: traditional and modern arrangement styles, seasonal, holiday and occasional designs. Students will achieve this through creating, designing, identifying, explaining and evaluating all topics of study. Balance, symmetry, harmony, unity and texture using floral and synthetic media, will be stressed in this course. Curriculum will include problem solving, creative thinking, written and verbal communication skills.

This is a year long class.  Students will learn the basic skills required for all shops as well as metalworking and welding.  Skills that will be covered are:  Measuring, reading a layout drawing, making & following a plan, sheet metal layout, spot welding, shearing, notching, bending, tool identification, drilling, forging and introduction to oxy-acetylene welding.  This class is repeatable for additional credits.

WELDING II
Grade level: 10 - 12 Prerequisites: Welding I
In this year long course the student will build on his/her ability and develop job-entry skills in each of the following areas: Oxy-Acetylene Welding; Metal Arc Welding; Metal Inert Gas Welding; As well as a working knowledge of:  Tungsten-Inert Gas Welding; Welding Metallurgy and Heat Treatment; Structural Steel Fabrication and Blueprint Reading.  Students will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of safe shop practices.  Skill levels in these areas will be determined by written examinations, test projects, student projects and teacher observation in the shop.  This class is repeatable for additional credits.

 

Motorcycle/Small Engine Repair

  This course is designed to train students for entry-level jobs in the fast growing industry of small engine and motorcycle repair.   There is a large demand for small engine mechanics in the area of lawn, garden, and farm equipment small motor repair.  There is also a growing demand for quality motorcycle mechanics.  Fuel costs have caused consumers to look for greater efficiency and more economical modes of transportation, and the motorcycle is filling this need.  This course places emphasis on overhaul, repair, adjustment, and troubleshooting of small engines, lawnmowers, chainsaws, and motorcycles.

This competency-based course introduces individuals to tasks related to preparation for further study in one of the specific subject matter related areas such as agricultural plant production or forestry and material resources and eventual entry into an agriculturally related occupation. It includes the study of animal physiology, animal organ systems, life sustaining systems and function at the cellular level, genetics and inheritance, animal and plant health management, livestock evaluation, animal and plant nutrition, and irrigation. Year 2 is a continuation of these topics.

Agricultural Biology is a one year, laboratory science course, designed for the college-bound student with career interests in agriculture.  Using agriculture as the learning vehicle, the course emphasizes the principals, central concepts an inter-relationships among the following topics: 1) molecular and cellular aspects of life, 2) chemical and structural basis of life, 3) energetics of life, 4) growth and reproduction in plants and animals, 5) genetics application to modern plants and domestic livestock species, 6) taxonomy of modern agricultural plants and animals, 7) animal behavior, 8) ecological relationships among plants, animals, and 9) similarities between animals and humans.  Nutrition, disease and health management of ruminants, monogastrics, and pseudoruminants in the Owens Valley will be major emphasis of this course.  The course is centered around an extensive laboratory component in order to connect current knowledge of life science concepts with agricultural applications, earth and physical science principals, and utilize other curriculum areas, including written and oral reporting skills.
